Featured Artist: Nothing But Thieves
This week on #NewMusicMonday I'm featuring “Sorry” by Nothing But Thieves, an alternative rock band from Essex, England. The song is a preview track to their second album, Broken Machine, expected to release September 8th. Some have described the track to have a Killers vibe to it, while song writer and guitarist Joe Langridge-Brown explains the meaning behind the track:
“Sorry is about getting older and the difficulties associated with it. It's about looking inwards and facing your demons."
The song describes the struggles of drowning out your inner demons and owning up to the shit you’ve done in the past. My original idea was to design a white, flat lettering piece, splashed over with three-dimensional black paint, representing the contrast between darkness and light through dimensions and color. But the more I listened to the song, the more I began to focus on the fourth line, “I run away like mercury”. I decided to build off of my original concept and instead of paint, alter the design to resemble liquid mercury. The chemical is reflective, fast-moving, and toxic and I think it's a perfect symbol for this song.
Give it a listen and let me know what you think!
